Mountain Description
Mount Mitchell rises to 2,038 metres in the Black Mountains of North Carolina and is the highest peak in the United States east of the Mississippi River. Protected as Mount Mitchell State Park, its summit is reached by a short paved trail from the parking area off the Blue Ridge Parkway, or on longer routes such as the Mount Mitchell Trail from Black Mountain Campground. The spruce-fir summit is cool year-round and often shrouded in cloud.
