Frequently asked questions
What is Naismith's rule?
A classic mountaineering rule of thumb from 1892: allow one hour for every 5 km of distance plus one hour for every 600 m of ascent.
Does the calculator account for breaks?
No - the estimate is pure walking time. Add 10-15 minutes of breaks per hour on longer hikes, plus time for lunch and photos.
How accurate is the estimate?
It is a solid planning baseline for fit hikers on decent trails. Rough terrain, snow, a heavy pack or a large group can add 25% or more.
