Mak
Trail description
The Little Almaty Loop (MAK) is a very challenging day hike for experienced and resilient hikers: from Medeu via Furmanov, Panorama, Bashuta, and Chimbu-latchka peaks to the Talgar Pass (approx. 3200 m). The track covers 14.7 km with 2151 m of elevation gain, reaching a maximum altitude of about 3460 m. Half of the route follows a well-beaten path, but it then transitions into scree slopes and ridges requiring sturdy boots; about 8% of the track is classified as T3 (challenging mountain hiking) on the SAC scale in OpenStreetMap. Springs are only available at the start, so hikers should carry 1–1.5 L of water. From the Talgar Pass, you descend via the Shymbulak cable car, which typically operates until 16:00–16:30, so an early start is essential. Almost the entire route passes through the Ile-Alatau National Park, which requires an entrance fee.
