Trail description
A 3 km walk with about 145 m of climbing up the valley at Guatín, north of San Pedro de Atacama, on the path known as the Valle de los Cactus, ending near the meeting of the Puritama and Puripica rivers at about 3,170 m. The two rivers join at Guatín to form the Río Vilama, which flows south past San Pedro de Atacama to the Salar de Atacama. The Puritama rises at the Puritama hot springs and runs through a deep gorge between cliffs about 50 m high, and its water has been measured at 24 °C at Guatín. The Puripica comes down from the slopes of the Sairecabur volcano and carries about a tenth of the Puritama's flow. In rainy years the river runs highest in January and February.
