Trail description

This challenging loop from the Skaftafell visitor centre crosses the Skaftafellsheiði heath through birch forest and scree, with the Morsárjökull and Skaftafellsjökull glaciers on either side and the flat Skeiðarársandur to the south. It follows the Svartifoss path, crosses a footbridge near Magnúsarfoss to Sjónarsker, heads toward Kristínartindar and Gláma, then descends via Sjónarnípa and Austurbrekkur (16.2 km, about 680 m of climbing; the park allows 5 to 6 hours). The heath is usually impassable in spring because of snowmelt and mud, and the park may keep it closed until mid or late June.
