Mount Chokai

Trail description

The upper 3.3 km of the climb of Mount Chokai, the volcano that stands above the Sea of Japan on the border of Akita and Yamagata, from around 1,700 m up the Senjadani (千蛇谷) valley to the summit shrine of Chokaisan Omonoimi Jinja and the hut beside it, just below the top. The last climb from the shrine to the 2,236 m Shinzan summit is a scramble over large boulders using hands throughout and is not part of this route. The usual start is the Hokodate fifth station on the Chokai Blue Line, and the round trip takes most of a day. The main hiking season is July to early October.
