Trail description

Waitasan, 1,500 m, is an old volcano on the border of Kokonoe in Oita and Oguni in Kumamoto, called Kuju Fuji and Oguni Fuji for its even cone. This route climbs from the northwest through grassland to the summit. The flat grassy top has a 360 degree view of the Kuju range, Aso and Yufu, and on clear days Sobo and Unzen. The area around it is one of Japan's leading geothermal regions, with power stations and the Kokonoe hot springs.
