Trail description
The Ridgeway National Trail in its official direction: 138.7 km with 1,668 m of climb from Overton Hill near Avebury to Ivinghoe Beacon. The western half is a broad track over the open chalk downland of the North Wessex Downs, passing close to Barbury Castle, Wayland's Smithy and the Uffington White Horse; after crossing the Thames at Goring it winds through the wooded hills and valleys of the Chilterns. Known as Britain's oldest road, it has been used for at least 5,000 years. The National Trail advises March to November for the best views and ground conditions, as the surface can be rutted in wet winters.
