Trail description

A 3.4 km hike in White Sands National Park from the Alkali Flat trailhead through the heart of the gypsum dunes, up and over 60 ft (18 m) dunes with little vegetation, to the edge of the Alkali Flat, the dry bed of ice-age Lake Otero. The Park Service rates it strenuous: follow the red diamond posts, and do not start when it is 85°F (30°C) or hotter.
