Max Patch

Trail Description

A short 1 km walk with about 60 m of climbing from Max Patch Road to the open top of Max Patch, a bald mountain on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee. It is a major landmark on the Appalachian Trail, which was moved onto its summit in 1984. The summit gives 360 degree views of the Bald Mountains, the Unakas, the Great Smoky Mountains, the Great Balsams and the Black Mountains. The mountain was first cleared in the early 19th century by farmers who used it as pasture for cattle and sheep.
