Trail description
A 3.5 km climb of about 310 m from the Commissary Trail to the summit of Mount Mitchell, at 6,684 ft the highest point east of the Mississippi River. Mount Mitchell State Park, established in 1915, was the first state park in North Carolina. Elisha Mitchell, the professor who established the mountain's height, is buried at the base of the summit observation platform, opened in 2009.
